Mini Marcos 7

One of my favorite little “ugly duckling” kits is the Mini Marcos. This car was all over Toronto a few years back in the Dufferin and College area, but I haven’t seen it in ages. But before it went back to who knows where, I managed to snap a few photos of it parked in the rain. Unweildly as it is, it’s really one of the cutest little cars on the road.

The Mini Marcos was designed by Jem Marsh, and about 1,200 of them were made in various forms from 1965 through 1993. Very few exist in Canada so it was a surprise to see.

    Very cool!
Ok, here is one for you guys more in the know about these than me,
In the late 70’s was a little car much like this one but the headlights were under covers more like a Z car,
It wore emblems that said “Marcos” and even perhaps had “Mini” on it,
It was in sad shape and the owner had it in the back of a buy here get ripped here car lot,
Besides front engine I recall thinking it was on a pan much like a VW beetle but the pan or floor was rotten wood, the owner of the lot said the cars whole frame was wood and in bad shape,
He wanted 500.00 no title so I lost interest,
So did any of these have wood frames or was that some weird personal built thing?

    Bats,

I’m pretty sure you saw a ‘proper’ Marcos, although it had no connection with the VW Beetle floor pan (an aside; someone once proudly announced to his friend, as he looked at my V6 Marcos at a car show, that it was VW Beetle based – So I opened the bonnet :D), but the chassis of the early cars was all wood, reminiscent of the WW2 Mosquito fighter bomber.

Lots of details at my site if you’re interested in more – http://www.marcoscars.net.

    Cheers.
