In Issaquah, Washington on eBay (#140298518422) right now is a first-generation VW-based Manta Montage kit car that looks like a nice base for someone to build a gorgeous vehicle from. The pan is unfortunately missing the title, so you’ll need to source a new title or otherwise re-register it, and the engine is not currently running — but it’s largely a complete car other than the rear window, which a buyer will need to fabricate out of lexan (one poster on the auction mentioned they’d done this for their Montage at a cost of about $70). The interior and electrical also need work. Nonetheless, the Montage is one of the nicest kit cars out there, and there are lots of little touches that make it look more “real” than most kits — to give you an example, look at the second-last photo, of the rear deck. The fact that the car has inner fenders goes a long way to keep it from looking cheap.
The biggest thing to me that took the Mirage and even the VW based Motage from being so much just another kit car and into being something more special or “real” as you put it is the custom windscreens, looking like all the 60’s racers used, just imagine how much better a Laser or Avenger could look if styled around a custom windscreen not a screen from a donor.

Grafting a windshield like this into a Laser 917 would make it an entirely new class of car, that’s for sure.
But nobody makes the windshields anymore right? That is the only reason I don’t bid on things like this. I am going the sterling route because the parts (esp glass) are more avail… unless things have changed from your sep2008 posting…

If you look for the Manta forum on Yahoo! track down david the owner his also owns Mantacarsdotcom, replace the “dot” with a “.”
David has been saying he is building the Mirage and I heard even the Montage, he offered all the glass and windscreens for these cars, at least a while back,
There are a few issues that may have been worked out since I last dropped by there, but seems he was building things in Canada and having problems getting stuff out or into the states or something like that,
Seems it is down right political or personal who he will deal with or sell to.
Or perhaps the company isnt really selling stuff as of yet, it’s hard to do this type thing as a business.
I owned one of the first Sterlings built, drove it from Vegas to Fl Cannonball run style in the 80’s, they are one of if not the best built of all the VW based kit cars and I never should have sold mine,
I didn’t believe it was much easier to get Sterling glass, I know the company is selling a new kit but I was under the impression windscreens were still hard to get, perhaps that too has changed since I last looked at them.

Yup… I have heard the same kind of story about the manta supplies….
What I can tell you about the Sterling glass is that I recently contacted sterlngsportscars and David Aliberti told me he had stock on both coasts and could ship asap… so thats a good sign on that end. -doyle
