I’m the current high bidder on this one, so how ’bout everyone ignore this entry.
My old tube-chassis Manta Montage was one of the nicest around, but this one that just hit eBay (#330300653568) in Brooklyn, NY is quite likely the nicest Manta Montage I’ve seen. And it’s been posted with no reserve, so nine days from now, someone is going to be very happy. It’s built on the Manta tube chassis with a 500 HP 455 V8 mounted to an automatic transmission and a rear end out of a Vette. Disc brakes all around, leather interior, tons of upgrades on the bodywork to make it look like a real McLaren M6GT, tilt steering, custom 3″ exhaust, lighted engine compartment, and more… the works. Seriously, this is the Montage to bid on. Like I said, I am.
This car was bought and resold a time or two, seems they even had a BIN price of like 48K at one point,
The poor thing got a sound trashing for it’s extra holes ducts and scoops and odd center console, but mostly for the 425 drive train that I guess the fellows on the Manta group believe to be a poor choice as far as handling goes, I have always heard that.
I liked it for what it is, a work of art, I just thought the price was way too high before, now with a no reserve auction as it is now I could see it selling for well under 20 in fact I wouldnt be shocked if the currect high bid took it home, but if someone really loves it and isnt looking for a top end handling car the bidding might get to or over the 20 mark,

I wish folks would quit putting poser stickers on cars and trying to pass them off as something else. The fun of a Laser kit is that it’s a homebuilt, and outrageous as hell. Not that it’s really a Porsche prototype racer because somebody pastes Porsche down the side. This beauty needs to lose the McLaren tags and proudly be a Manta.

that was trashing a group of early kit cars, the rant was that they used real emblems, being pesented as the real deal,
The funny part was only one car in the lot was using poser emblems,
None of the owners are trying to pass their cars off as the real deal, I know several of the guys,
I went on my typical long winders there, I am really in the middle ground on this one, if a person wants to use emblems or Labels like I want to run a “PORSCHE” banner on my laser 917 windshield I say go for it, just dont get cheesy and try to pass it off as the real deal.
And if I had a Manta I would brag it’s a Manta not try to pass it off as a Mclaren,

Where is the line drawn? What exactly is a pseudo-replica, I am guessing you are talking cars like the Avenger the Kelmark and Laser 917 , Shouldn’t be wearing GT40, Dino and Porsche badges,
is it ok for the high end type GT40 and AC Cobra replicas to wear the badges of the originals?

Unfortunately, it’s an automatic which takes the fun out of it. Also, the extra scoops are probably good for air circulation, but absolutely ruin the lines of the car. It’s not a McLaren even if the stickers say other wise. Sort of like the guy who puts Ferrari stickers on his Fiero kit. Doesn’t make it the real thing.

Don’t they do a B&M shit kit for that trans? That might make it more fun because it’s like a clutchless manual. Marauder kit cars did a nice M6GT replica but I think they closed down.

Hey Rich,
Those B&M kits are great for a street drag and allow for a shorter throw and faster, harder shifting. I just prefer the heel to toe approach of a manual stick–especially if the car is supposed to handle well. Also, the 425 is a little on the heavy side–would be nice if they used a lighter engine (289?)

ron from bc I had a 1984 montage small block 400 porce tranny and rear end its not a maclaren but fast very quick car not great handling car on high speed
corners but big time fun three diferent vipors took me on all to lose ! fun car !!!
